The Amateur Boxing Association of England is based in Sheffield at the English Institute of Sport, as is the GB amateur boxing squad.
The Amateur Boxing Association of England chose Sheffield as the permanent centre for their England and GB operations in 2006, having been attracted to the city's outstanding sports facilities and long tradition of top class boxing.
GB Boxing recently had their best ever Olympic performance with 8 boxers qualifying out of a maximum of 11 weights. Three of the qualifiers medalled with James De Gale winning Olympic gold.
Sheffield, also known as the Steel City, will now host international competitions and training camps as well as continuing to be a vibrant regional centre of club boxing.
Boxing is vibrant at all levels from junior through to professional levels. The city boasts fourteen affiliated amateur clubs with 180 'carded' amateurs.
Sheffield's catalogue of success in professional boxing also makes impressive reading. The City is the home of the legendary St Thomas's Gym at Wincobank, run by Brendan Ingle MBE and the city has produced many internationally recognised professionals including current World Champions Junior Witter (WBC Light-Welterweight) and Clinton Woods (IBF Light Heavyweight).
Former World Champions from Sheffield include Naseem Hamed (WBO, WBC, IBF Featherweight World Champion), Johnny Nelson (WBO Cruiserweight World Champion) and Paul 'Silky' Jones (WBO Light-Middleweight World Champion).
