Life at No 57: The Sheffield Terraced House Dig

Heeley City Farm and Sheffield University are giving everyone an opportunity to join in with this exiting community archaeology project. Come and meet the archaeologists, share the excitement of archaeological discovery first hand and find out what is underneath our Goat Field on Alexandra Road. A typical Sheffield two-up-two-down Victorian terraced house may seem like an unusual target for an archaeological dig, but this community project, will provide opportunities for volunteers of all ages to experience and learn about archaeological excavation techniques. The project aims to contrast the life and concerns of the inhabitants at Alexandra Rd with some of the wider issues addressed by the farm today. The dig will be during Festival of British Archaeology fortnight (Saturday 17th July to Sunday 1st August 2010) its free and open to everyone, no previous experience needed.

2010 will be the second year of the project. The success of last years dig and the analysis of our finding has led us to continue. The archaeological excavations will be run by professional archaeologists (from the University of Sheffield and HCF), and everyone will be able to take part. Running alongside the excavations will be a variety of related workshops and activities including finds washing, geophysics, and displays and discovering more about the people that lived on Alexandra Road with Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust. This will be supported by a combination of excavation desk based research and oral history which will be done by a number of dedicated volunteers supported by HCF Heritage staff and University of Sheffield archaeologists.
